Congrats on getting into college! There’s a lot to do now — packing, signing up for classes, saying goodbye to friends and making sure you’re up to date on all your recommended vaccines. If you’re moving into dorms, you’ll likely be living in close contact with more people than ever. This puts you at a higher risk of catching a disease like meningitis (meningococcal disease), COVID-19 or the Flu.
Why Meningitis should be on your radar
Meningitis, or meningococcal disease, is classified as swelling in the meninges, the area that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Meningococcal disease spreads through bacteria and causes meningitis. There are many strains, called serogroups, of meningococcal disease, but five are the most common strains – A, B, C, W-135, and Y. Meningococcal disease can spread quickly in dorms and group housing. Early symptoms can look like a cold or flu, but in severe cases, it can lead to serious illness, even death. Luckily, there are vaccines to protect you from all strains of meningococcal disease!
1. MenACWY
The MenACWY vaccine is known as a quadrivalent vaccine because it protects against four different strains of the bacteria. The MenACWY vaccine is a two-dose vaccine, with the first dose recommended for ages 11-12 and the second recommended at age 16.
2. MenB
The MenB vaccine is also a two-dose vaccine recommended for ages 16-18. This vaccine protects you against serogroup B.
3. MenABCWY
In 2023, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) approved the use of a MenABCWY pentavalent vaccine, the first vaccine to protect against the five major serogroups of meningococcal disease. The MenABCWY vaccine is an option for preteens and teens who are getting MenACWY and MenB vaccines at the same visit. Teens can receive MenABCWY vaccine instead of two separate vaccines. Talk to your healthcare provider about which vaccine is most appropriate for you.
More information about the meningitis vaccine and recommended doses can be found here.
Many college campuses require the meningococcal vaccines before move-in, but even if yours doesn’t, it’s still important to ensure you’re fully protected before starting school. A lot of students think they’ve received all the recommended meningococcal vaccines, but often they’ve only gotten the MenACWY doses. That’s why it’s essential to review your vaccine history and talk to your healthcare provider to ensure you have the right protection.
Other Tips to Keep in Mind Before Move In
- Make sure you’re up to date on all your other vaccines, such as HPV, TdaP, COVID-19 and Flu
- Get vaccinated early, you have all summer! Don’t wait until you’re on campus.
- Double check where you can get your vaccines, many are available at pharmacies as well as at your doctor’s office.
Remember, Meningitis is rare, but fast and dangerous, don’t take the risk. Protect your health, your semester, and your friends: Get vaccinated before you go!
