How to Talk to Parents Who Have Questions About Vaccines

Today’s parents face an overwhelming mix of information about vaccines – some accurate, some not. Social media chatter, sensationalist headlines and declining trust in institutions have contributed to confusion and hesitancy. Yet one thing hasn’t changed. Healthcare providers (HCPs) remain the most trusted voice in a parent’s vaccine decision-making.

Despite their influential role, HCPs don’t always provide clear, confident recommendations about vaccines during patient encounters. Many clinicians feel pressed for time, lack tailored communication skills or resources to navigate these conversations. Many state the facts without really listening to the more nuanced concerns of parents. This can leave parents uncertain and searching for answers elsewhere.

Communication training specific to vaccination questions has typically been limited, making these conversations more challenging for HCPs and families alike. That is why Unity Consortium created the 3Cs Program to help fill these gaps and provide a framework for HCPs to deliver messages that are Confident, Concise and Consistent.

This blog outlines a few key takeaways from the program, but if you are interested in learning more, check out the full program here

Listen, Engage, and Connect

The heart of the 3C’s Program revolves around core skills that HCPs can apply during every vaccine conversation.

Listen. Every parent’s concern has a story behind it. When a parent expresses worry about safety, side effects, timing, or necessity, the first step is to truly listen. HCPs are trained to ask open-ended questions like, “Can you tell me more about what you’ve heard?” or “What worries you most?” This invites conversation rather than correction and shows their perspective matters.

Engage with parents once concerns are voiced by responding with empathy and curiosity. HCPs acknowledge the parent’s feelings, validate that it’s normal to have questions, and maintain a calm, conversational tone. Engagement transforms what could be a tense moment into a productive conversation.

Connect. Link the conversation back to what parents care about most: keeping their children healthy, minimizing illness, and ensuring they can participate fully in school, sports, and daily life. HCPs can help parents see how immunizations align with their own goals for their child.

Together, these three steps help HCPs create meaningful, trust-building conversations that lead to confident vaccine decisions.

Back to Basics on Talking About Vaccines

The 3C’s Program encourages HCPs to keep vaccine discussions simple, clear, and grounded in the basics. Parents are often overwhelmed by conflicting information, so HCPs benefit from focusing on what matters most: what the vaccine prevents, how it works, and why it is recommended at that age.

Clarity and simplicity are powerful. This “back to basics” strategy emphasizes plain language, transparent explanations, and concise messages. Instead of deep scientific detail, HCPs highlight the real risks of vaccine-preventable diseases and the benefits of staying healthy and protected.

By pairing foundational vaccine information with the relational skills of the 3Cs, HCPs can navigate questions with confidence and compassion to help parents make decisions that support their child’s long-term health.
